Resumen:
To understand the formation and trajectory of this kind of collective action in the country, the
established literature on the LGBT Movement in Brazil has favored the experiences of
militancy groups based in Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. Using a different setting, this
investigation is dedicated to researching the experiences and struggles for free sexual
orientation and gender identity in a state in northern Brazil. The objective of this study is to
analyze how the processes of claiming rights by the LGBT social movement in Pernambuco
were structured, using repertoires of society-state interaction established between 1980 and
2020. In this sense, in terms of methodology, a qualitative explanatory research was conducted.
Bibliographic and documentary materials were consulted, as well as interviews with seventeen
Movement leaders. The collected data were organized to form the research corpus, which was
then processed using the analytical perspective proposed by content analysis. The study reveals
that the LGBT Movement in Pernambuco has had interactions with the state from its
institutional emergence in the 1980s, with the goal of gaining rights and combatting
discrimination. This process resulted in the passage of legislation to combat LGBTphobia, the
expansion of public debate on sexual and gender diversity issues, and, most importantly, the
establishment of several public policy departments and specialized services for the LGBT
population, both within the state government and in several municipal administrations. Based
on the findings, it is hoped that this research will contribute to a more comprehensive and
democratic understanding of the emergence and trajectory of struggles for sexual and gender
diversity in Brazil.
