Abstract:
This dissertation aims to analyze the identities and representations of Cariri, region located
in south of Ceará, elaborated from the historiographical and literary production realized in
the period 1855-1980, with emphasis on the production of the intellectuals founders of the
Instituto Cultural do Cariri - ICC, an organization created in Crato in 1953 and that
excelled as a center of production of images and meanings for the region. The fountains
researched gives privilege for the magazine Itaytera, the official organ of the ICC and the
production of three historians who are considered the main mentors of the Institute: Irineu
Pinheiro, Jose de Figueiredo Filho and Antonio Gomes de Araujo. These intellectuals have
proposed a redesign of the identity project for the Cariri, which had been effecting since
the mid- nineteenth century , from meanings elaborated in Crato and that produced the
representation of "City of Culture". Also, this dissertation analyzes the reception of the
identity project of the ICC to the region by local public opinion, especially by young
artistic movements, in a time frame that comprises the 1960s and 1970s.
