Résumé:
Cities are relations between spaces and events. They contain memories,
identities and meanings. They are inserted in people’s lives through memories and
feelings. Cities are produced and modeled according to the historical-spatial process of
society. In this context, I highlight the city of Campina Grande, its experiences and
spaces. The present text is concerned to make possible another view at the process of
construction of Álvaro Gaudêncio de Queiroz neighborhood, in Campina Grande -
construction as an inhabited and meaningful space by its residents. We will walk by the
way of occupation of the neighborhood, the experiences, meanings formed by the media
and by society. We will tell stories of residents who experienced the occupation process,
and especially, the way in which experiences in space became possible even with the
lack of infrastructure. We will approach the way in which residents daily claimed and
fought for the improvement of their quality of life, which made the neighborhood
become the Malvinas, officially in 1987. For the accomplishment of our work we
walked by official documents as well as interviews made with the residents of the
neighborhood, besides works of historiographic nature, dialoguing with authors that
deal with the city, memory, identity and social relations and daily practices,
emphasizing Michel de Certeau. As we raise questions about how to think about the city
of Campina Grande, in its urbanization process, the daily practices of the residents,
living conditions, social aspects of the subjects, their meanings, achievements and
struggles, we are contributing to the debates that have been held at the academy on
urbanity, social relations and conflicts, housing issues, daily life, urban reforms and
related political and economic scenarios.
