Abstract:
Religiosíty, as a theme in historical studies has long been sidelined, silenced and
denied by historians. This work aims to alleyiáte some of this disinterestedness pn
the part of Brazilian historians. Religion is a fertiie field for historical research. The
historical study of religion provides the historian contemplate the social relations of a
particular time and, place, Historicize religioüs fealities^Cariri Ceará is the main'
subject of this research. The eampaign of persecution the protestant in Cariri
performed primarily in the actions of violence by Catholics against Protestants. The
violence affected the sensibilities of thé Protestant bodies, and tp this end the
Câtholic Church used the media thát were withln our reach, newspapers,
newsletters, assocíations, and the population itself. The action by the Church was
intended to ban the protesters from the region and reaffirm their place in society. Oh
the other hand, Protestants, who were the Regular Baptists, reacted astutely to
remain in the region and fuffilE its missión in caririenses. lands. The mission was
accomplished, but the price of much sacrifice. Celebrities with Mr. Edward McLain,
Jim Wilíson, Albert Johnsori were vital for the establishment of the Regular Baptists in
Cariri.
