Abstract:
Owing to the class C nowadays represents more than half of the Brazilian
population, this study aimed to investigate which literacy practices are mobilized when
subjects of this class will have access to new cultural assets and what impacts/changes in
their literacy practices are indicated by these subjects as a result of your access to cultural
assets related to their economic rise in recent years. Thus, our general objective was to
collect information about the implications/ changes in literacy practices of the subjects of
the new middle class due to the access to these cultural assets. And, as a more specific
objective, identify the cultural assets and the literacy practices mobilized by class C
subjects that result from the increase of income of this class subjects. This is a research in
Applied Linguistics descriptive and interpretive, qualitative character with quantitative
data, whose corpus was constituted by two types of questionnaires, one for identification
of research subjects answered by several people to form the sampling; and another
related to cultural property that the subjects from the studied social class have access,
which was answered only by the ten subjects focused in this study. The data were
analyzed based on the new literacy studies (Barton & Hamilton, 2000; Gee, 1991;
Kleiman, 1995; Street, 2003), focusing on the existence of multiple literacies and
considering the concepts of literacy practices and literacies in social groups (Masagão,
2003, Souza, 2011). Therefore, the results of this investigation led us to conclude that the
subjects from the new middle class have access to several cultural assets and mobilize
various literacy practices whether or not institutionally recognized. We observed that the
subjects of this study prioritize investment, firstly, in private school, the purchase of
computer and internet access, thus, having access to websites, emails and social
networks, both by traditional means, the computer, and by cell phone with data packet
and, this way, mobilizing daily reading and writing practices. Secondly, they seek to invest
in assets such as language courses, computer, going to the movies, rent movies, and
others. In this way, we found that the class C subjects, here surveyed, with the access to
these new cultural property, seem to mobilize many kinds of literacy, but the practice is
still the school.
