Résumé:
This research aimed to study features of popular religious culture in Apolônio Alves dos
Santos (AAS), based on a corpus comprising four of his cordels (strings), which are: A mulher
que dançou com o Diabo numa boate em Campina, História do Boi que falou em Minas
Gerais, O homem que deu a luz em Minas Gerais e A vida de Pedro Cem. Our analysis
focused on observing the configuration of a popular religiosity through the perception of how
the reference to the deities occur, the consideration of forgiveness and divine punishment, the
characters characterization concerning to obedience or disobedience to the religious entity,
beliefs and changes imposed to the lives of the types of characters created by AAS. Linked to
this, the poet uses some linguist resources, like adjectives, comparisons and exemplifications,
which denote narrator repression or approval through the argumentative match and the
vocabulary selection in the brochures. Our conclusions indicate that in the religious universe
found in ASS work, we can see the belifs in deities and in the laws imposed by the society,
affecting the actions and characters‟ life experiences. To do this research, we used the
theoretical considerations of Abreu (1999) on the arrival and consolidation of Cordel
Literature in Brazil, concerning to the classification attempts, we observed Suassuna (1977)
and Alves Sobrinho (2003), about the social character contained in the Cordel Literature, we
used Ayala (2011), Ribeiro (1986), Tavares (2005, 2007) and on popular religiosity features,
Sousa (1982) and Xidieh (1993).
