The representation of the elderly in poems for children. This study aimed to verify the representation of the elderly in children's poems to ascertain
how the elder is presented to child. Accordingly, in our study, bibliographical and
interpretive nature, we selected seven nursery rhymes, modern or contemporary authors,
who represent the elderly in his verses. Observed in these poems the physical
characteristics and represented the old profile; identify and describe the type of
intergenerational relationship existing between the elderly and children; and investigate
whether the poems suggest the child respect and care for the elderly. To do so,
fundamented us at: Camarano (1999), Bruno (2010), Mercadante (2010) and Mendes
(2012), to contextualize the situation of the elderly in Brazil; Azevedo (2001), Castro
(2007) and Ribeiro (2010) to discuss specifics and historical concepts " child"; and Bordini
(1986;2003), Aguiar (2001), Pinheiro (2007; 2010) and Silva (2010) to highlight the
peculiarities of Children's Poetry. As main results, we found that most of the poems brings
a positive representation of the old and generally characterized as relative
(grandfather/grandmother) of self-lyrical. In addition to submitting a dignified image of the
elderly and very respectful intergenerational relationships, there is also a tendency to
portray him in a playful and/or enchanted form, which entertains and stimulates the
imagination of the child reader. In this sense, when read by children, these poems can help
them to develop evaluative attitudes and actions toward the elder.
