Resumen:
Through a bibliographical review this research study proposes a reinterpretation of Oswaldian
anthropophagy regarded as a theory of appropriation. Considering that in an initial moment
Oswald de Andrade’s trend advocated the nationalizing digestion of foreign cultures, the
Anthropophagy metaphor has been utilized to the creative catalysis of information produced
by the other. This idea of Oswaldian anthropophagy allows us to assume Brazilianness itself
as a kind of food for the anthropophagic artist. In this study, the Brazilianness to be eaten up
is depicted by our literature and its possibilities throughout the passing of time. As a study
object, we have analyzed Caetano Veloso’s works which are said to be anthropophagic since
they own aesthetic features from different literary schools. In order to engender an objective
reading, the periodization adopted to describe the history of Brazilian literature covers an
interval from Baroque to Concretism, disregarding Premodernism due to the lack of
conceptual precision. Furthermore, it is initially defended that folksong affords typical
characteristics of poetry which may be analyzed in light of literary criticism. Thus, the chosen
songs for this corpus will be analyzed as texts, evidencing aspects such as, rhythm, meter,
image, grammar, syntax and so forth. However, this research should not be seen as structural
one. It is an initial reading to achieve a greater interpretation. Caetano Veloso himself utilizes
Brazilian literature, assimilating the productive aspects in order to create a new object in an
authentic way that is a multi-meaningful collection songbook whose aesthetic elements
summarize the national art as a whole.
