Resumo:
The voluntary work fulfils an increasingly important role in society. Its achievement in the
organizational context can bring benefits to society, employees and organizations, including
those belonging to the public sector, which can adopt these actions as a good management
practice. In this context, this study aimed to analyze how the Higher Education of Federal
Institutions - Ifes can encourage employees to practice volunteer activities. The study was
implemented in three stages. The first one aimed to understand the evolution and the main
theoretical discussions on corporate voluntary work, with a bibliometric analysis and a
systematic review of the literature. It was concluded that there is an increasing number of
research on the subject, with a dominant business vision and little reference to the practice of
the public service context. The studies are mainly concerned with understanding the aspects
that motivate or inhibit the participation of employees in voluntary activities and the
behaviors came from it. The second stage, a qualitative approach, search for examining the
encouragement practice to the volunteering conducted by the Ifes considering the theory on
corporate voluntary work and the relevant legislation, with data coming from documentary
and bibliographical research. At this stage, it was found that the government employees
voluntary work has a direction that converges with its purpose, different from the actions
performed by the private sector. The last stage of the study focused on analyzing the influence
of contextual and motivational aspects on the volunteering practice by Ifes employees. For
this, a mixed methods approach was used, with data collection through a questionnaire and
semi-structured interview. The outcomes achieved indicate the existence of contextual aspects
of the public service able to influence government employees’ voluntary work.
