Resumo:
The present research aimed to evaluate sustainable practices, in the area of operations,
performed at UFCG Campina Grande. Through this understanding, tools were sought to
analyze sustainability in Higher Education Institutions and the instrument entitled STARS
(Sustainability Tracking, Assessment and Rating System) adapted by Oliveira (2018) for the
Brazilian context of HEIs was chosen. Based on the choice of tool used in the work, the
following areas were defined for the identification of sustainable practices: Air and Climate;
Buildings; Energy; Food and Meal Services; Ground; Shopping; Transport; waste; and water.
Interviews were carried out to obtain data and relevant information for each indicator of the
tool. A questionnaire was also carried out with the administrative managers of the UFCG in
order to ascertain the perception of the strategic area on sustainability at the university. It was
possible to observe that sustainable practices in the subjects evaluated are at a very early stage
in the UFCG in most areas of operations. The UFCG Sustainable Logistics Plan (2020-2024)
was identified, which contains some proposed goals to improve sustainability in the Institution,
but there are still bottlenecks to be filled. Based on research on sustainable practices carried out
in other HEIs, some suggestions for improvement and/or expansion of sustainability were
proposed at the UFCG Campina Grande campus. Suggestions for future work are to use
Oliveira's (2018) methodology, based on the STARS tool, in other Brazilian public federal
universities for the purpose of comparing results. The limitations of the research were the
absence and/or difficulty in obtaining data from the UFCG on the sustainable practices carried
out.
