Resumen:
To comprehend the transformation process in the urban landscape and the endurances that occur in the built space of the city of Campina Grande (PB), taking as object the Beco da Pororoca (current Alm. Alexandrino Side Street) and its immediate surroundings, through the municipal policy for protection of the historical patrimony itself, was the aim of this study. In Campina Grande (PB), this process is marked by successive demolitions and (re)buildings. The investigation about this urban street is justified by the importance of recognizing the bohemian and avant-garde era that this “memory place” pictures. Assuming the questions of which attributes are responsible for the modifications of the urban landscape in the Beco da Pororoca, and how from this urban fragment one
can understand the many process of transformation in the landscape of the city of Campina Grande (PB). For that, an urban landscape analysis of the present and the past, its modifications and the conditions that provided the successive changes, was performed. With the aim of investigating the formations and transformations of the Almirante Alexandrino Side Street (Beco da Pororoca) between the years of 1920 and 2020, in its forms, uses and cultural appropriations. To do that, throughout the research, it was sought to: a) comprehend the history of the city of Campina Grande (PB) and the shaping process of the Almirante Alexandrino Side Street, relating it to the political, economic, social and cultural contexts of the mentioned period; b) understand the course of valuation, breakdown and patrimonialization of Campina Grande’s (PB) downtown. The analysis and the theoretical development of the research were made from the approximation of concepts such as memory, patrimony and urban landscape. Based on theorists like Ricoeur (2010), Choay (2013), Giovannoni (1913), Poulet (2009), Sá Carneiro (2012) e Abreu (2015); intertwining with the questions about modifications in the urban landscape, by the vision of Sousa (2001), Freire (2010), Fernandes (2011), Veras (1988), Câmera
(1988), Carvalho (2011), Barbosa (1999), Araújo (2010), Silva (2019), Souza (2002), Nascimento (2007) e Queiroz (2008); relating those landscape transformations to the Beco da Pororoca’s physical space, using as references Tinem (2005), Bomfim (2022), Dantas (2020) e Reis Filho (2014). The research is organized in two stages, being the first one a historical rescue from the previews works, and the second phase from the connection between architecture, legislation, urban landscape remodeling and cultural appropriations. The results of this survey show the importance of highlighting and giving the leading role to the stories of those who have always been marginalized. Furthermore, the need for more supervision, management and projects, that add the city’s historical areas in the
urban planning, aiming to what was built in the past to live in accordance with the present and the future, respecting the temporalities and historicity of each urban street.
