The use of appropriate techniques for overcoming tegumentary dormancy present in seeds are considered of great importance, as they allow obtaining an increase in germination capacity. Thus, the objective is to determine the best method for overcoming dormancy in seeds Mimosa ophthalmocentra Mart. ex Benth. previously selected during storage. The work was carried out at the Laboratory of Ecology and Botany and at the Laboratory of Plant Anatomy and Physiology (UFCG-CDSA). Seeds were collected from matrices in the municipality of Sumé-PB at Sítio Riacho das Porteiras. Then taken to the laboratory, they were homogenized, packed in a PET bottle and stored in a freezer (Controlled conditions, at 5°C and 15°C) for a period of 90 days. For the dormancy tests, four pre-germination treatments were used: T1: Control – intact seeds; T2: manual scarification with 80 grit sandpaper opposite the hilum and then the seeds were soaked in water for a period of 24 hours; T3: manual scarification with 80 grit sandpaper opposite the hilum and T4: Topping – performed the cut on the side opposite the hilum with the aid of scissors. Emergence (%), emergence speed index, seedling length (cm) and seedling dry mass were evaluated. The experimental design was set up in a completely randomized design, with four replications of twenty-five seeds for each test. It was verified after storage that topping (T4) and scarification with sandpaper (T3) were the treatments that promoted the best results for the evaluated parameters with emergence values of 96% and 94%; IVE of 1.92 and 1.8; seedling length of 15.1cm and 12.6cm and dry mass of 12.5g and 11.6g, respectively. Thus, topping and scarification with 80-grit sandpaper are considered suitable methods for overcoming dormancy in M. ophthalmocentra seeds in the Cariri region of Paraíba.
