Resumo:
The increase in world population and the exacerbated growth in the production of consumer
goods lead to a greater generation of solid waste, major causes of environmental damage. As a
result, there is a need to implement mechanisms such as the characterization of solid waste,
which allows the recognition of these wastes so that later actions aimed at their management
can be implemented. Thus, the present study had the general objective of characterizing and
quantifying the solid waste produced at the Education and Health Center of the Federal
University of Campina Grande, the characterization process took place during the four-week
period between August and October 2022. The characterization was carried out from the waste
produced in the sectors with the greatest circulation of people in the aforementioned teaching
institution, where the waste was separated and weighed categorically. From the
characterization it was possible to identify that the most produced waste in the institution are
plastic and organic matter. It is considered that the results obtained from the study are useful
in promoting projects aimed at reusing and reducing the institution's solid waste.
