Abstract:
The work addresses the mental health of Brazilian jailed women, and
its relationship with State action. The main objective is to establish a diagnosis
based on the searching on the relevant bibliography, recognizing the current
situation regarding the mental health of female prisoners. For the study of this
population, the methodology used was the bibliographic research modality, that
assumed descriptive contours when reporting and describing characteristics and
properties of the prison environment. As there aren’t proportionately few studies on
the subject, exploratory trends are also reported. The methodological option was
based on the deductive method, by narrowing the ideal considerations until it
approached reality. The first chapter traced historical tags to the theme, while the
second tried to illustrate the problem through statistical data, combined with relevant
legal excerpts. The third and final chapter was directed to try to exemplify what is
the female experience in prison. The results obtained were that state neglect is the
rule that never fails, which even causes the collapse of other institutions, such as
the family, maternity and the possibility of mental health during prison.
