The semi-arid region is known for the irregularity of rainfall and biotic factors such
as salinity and high levels of temperature and evapotranspiration, which limit the
potential of crops. Passion fruit is an important crop and considered a source of
sustainable development of national fruit production, several advances have
been made to improve the potential of this crop in the different regions of the
Brazilian Northeast. Therefore, the objective was to analyze the potential of
scientific advances in passion fruit cultivation in semi-arid regions. Methods of
study and research of the procedures were chosen, namely: surveys referring to
agriculture and agronomic factors of passion fruit based on data in different
international and national scientific repositories; analysis of what is intrinsically
linked to the technologies developed in the process from planting to harvest. For
searches in Scopus, Scielo, Web of Science and EMBRAPA, the following
keywords were used together with the Boolean operators AND, OR/NOT:
Passiflora, edulis, irrigation, salinity. In academic Google, keywords that were
correlated with the subject in question were used: Passiflora sp, Passiflora edulis,
passion fruit, passion fruit culture in the Northeast. Articles were selected based
on title and abstract. From the searches on the aforementioned national and
international platforms, it can be seen that studies are still scarce, which is why
the semi-arid region has a low yield in relation to other producing regions. The
main challenges of technological advances in passion fruit cultivation are the
strong fluctuation in productivity, largely related to phytosanitary problems, often
constituting a limiting factor for the expansion of the culture in Brazil.
Technological advances suggest that the implementation of new technologies in
fruit farming will allow significant increases in production. The challenge is to
make the knowledge generated by the research available and used, being done
through access to new technologies with projects made available by companies
and the government through public policies.
