Abstract

The 1970s in Northeast Brazil was marked by a series of developmental government actions that sought to leverage the northeast economy, and it is in this context that the Irrigated Perimeter of São Gonçalo (PISG) was created. This work aims to demonstrate data on the decline in agricultural production in the PISG in the last decade and to bring to the table the main causes for the problem reported in the bibliography found on the subject. The bibliographic research was the most used methodological procedure to reach the results of this research, accompanied by studies and field visits for observation and analysis purposes. The results found showed that the perimeter underwent a large drop in agricultural production in the last decade, with its production almost eradicated during the period. In addition, it was identified that the lack of water management on the part of government leaders, linked to environmental degradation caused by the poor production practices adopted, with below-average rainfall periods, combined with market pressures that leveraged the production demands of the perimeter, were the main causes of productive decline in the PISG in the last decade.
