BRAGA, João Roberto Dantas.
Resumo:
The present work aims to investigate the influence of the old railway station of São João do Rio
do Peixe - PB, and its surroundings, in the processes of urbanization, valorization and spatial
selectivity. Inaugurated in 1925, the railway station and its equipment, in that context, provided
a new alternative for transporting passengers and goods on board the train. Before the arrival
of the railway network, transport was predominantly carried out on the back of animals on cart
roads. After the deactivation of the city's railway station, that space lost its role as a protagonist,
becoming marginalized. The lack of maintenance of the building and its surroundings resulted
in its degradation. It required the involvement of part of the São João population and
intervention by the municipal government to revitalize and give new functions to the station.
The “Save the Station” campaign appears, with significant popular support, and with the aim
of making renovations to the property feasible for the purposes of preservation and new
functionality. The intervention of the municipal government was essential. After the
revitalization, the municipal government started to manage the now Espaço Cultural Estação
das Artes, a former railway station. In this work, we will also deal with issues involving
different temporalities, mechanization of the territory, roughness, fixed and flows, old and new
functions. Now the Estação das Artes has different functions, new equipment and a new spatial
appreciation is configured in the surroundings. To carry out the work, a bibliographical survey
was carried out.
