Resumen:
The study aimed to monitor the survival of grafted seedlings and its relation to seasonal factors of
rainfall in an area of Caatinga in Western Cariri of Paraíba. The experiment was executed in Area
Reserved Experimental Area for Studies of Ecology and Dynamics of the Caatinga of the Laboratory
of Ecology and Botany - LAEB/CDSA/UFCG (7°39'38.8 '' S and 36°53'42.4 '' W; 538 m of altitude;
1,02ha). Seedling planting was done in the middle of native vegetation with doing only pruning
branches, taking advantage of the existing natural clearings. The average spacing between
individuals was 12 x 12 m and grafting method adopted was grafting the top cleft in ungrafted.
Thus, 70 patients were implanted in July 2011. After a year of monitoring was observed that only
29 individuals survived, due probably reduced rainfall that hit the Brazilian semiarid region in this
period. Rainfall below the regional average remained in 2013 resulting in reduced survival values
that were 44 seedlings, of which six of the initially deployed in 2011 and 38 responses. Therefore,
the data proffer a significant contribution of knowledge about the ecology of umbuzeiro.
