Resumo:
Smoking is considered by the World Health Organization
(WHO) as one of the biggest public health problems, the main
preventable cause of death and responsible for about 5 million deaths annually
in the world. In this context, the SMOKING TREATMENT PROJECT:
MULTIDISCIPLINARY APPROACH (PTEM) aims to collaborate with public health,
reducing the prevalence of smoking and, thus, acting actively in the
prevention of diseases. Objective: to measure the prevalence of abstaining from
smoking in patients assisted by the PTEM. Method: cross-sectional study
cross-sectional study carried out through the analysis of clinical records of the participants of the
PTEM, held at the University Hospital Alcides Carneiro (HUAC), in
Campina Grande-PB. Results: 292 clinical records of the
patients, the majority being female (72.6%), Catholic (74.0), brown
(52.1%), married (46.6%). As for education, it was found that age
average smoking initiation was lower in individuals with no formal education
(13 vs 15 years). The frequency of cigarette use was higher among those without
formal schooling and among those who were unable to quit smoking and those
female individuals started smoking earlier. With
With regard to abstinence, no statistically significant differences were observed.
significant between socio-demographic variables. Conclusion: The percentage
abstinence does not differ according to gender, marital status, education,
respondents' professional activity and monthly family income. The treatment
employed by PTEM, using combined therapy, reached rates of
abstinence similar to those found by other similar studies
registered in the current literature, whose effectiveness is shown to be superior to that of
treatment with the drug used alone.
