Resumen:
Due to the characteristics of educational heterogeneity of our population,
neuropsychological tests designed to assess individuals with high education and
different culture from our own, are not indicated for use in our midst after a simple
and literal translation. Currently, it is recognized that such items should not only be
translated well linguistically, requiring adaptation to maintain the validity and reliability
of the instrument at a conceptual level. The goal was to translate into Portuguese of
Brazil and culturally adapt the tool to SPMSQ assessment of cognitive function in
elderly subjects. The Brazilian version of SPMSQ involved six stages of translation
and cultural adaptation: initial translation, synthesis, back translation, review by the
multidisciplinary committee, pre-test and review by that committee. Presents the
results of each step. According to the methodology employed, some changes in the
questionnaire were necessary in order to adapt it to understanding and Brazilian
culture, without, however, altering the concept idiom originally described. It was
concluded that the Brazilian version showed semantic, conceptual and cultural, with
good understanding and acceptance among the elderly.
