Resumo:
The work presented in this dissertation
concerns a study of babaçu coconut coarse as a porous material
for filter, using double bed made up of a coarse layer
upon a sand one.
The sdudy have presented the characterization
of the ma teria! according to the A.W.W.A standard, as wel 1
as the results of filtration tests performed in a water trea^
tment plant at Alto Branco, Campina Grande - Paraíba.
In the stage of tests the performance of
layer compound by Sand-babaçu is balanced with a sand-antrac
i t e , which is used in water treatment plant. The basic para
meters chosen to analyse the performance of the materi al were'
the head of lose in several leveis in the filter and the turbidity removal of the treated w a t e r . The turbidity includes
several other factors, that affects the filtration.
The same consideration is true for head
loss which makes it possible to find out the retention capacity
of flocs by filtering media.
The babaçu coconut coarse have presented a'
good performance, and can be considered as a new option for
the water treatment plant, mainly in north and northeast of
Brasil, where babaçu exists in great quantity.
