Resumen:
Introduction: Graves' disease represents a common etiology of hyperthyroidism.
Orbital manifestations, with appearance and progression influenced by factors
such as smoking, may appear in patients with Graves' disease.
Objective: To assess the prevalence of smoking and its influence on exophthalmos in
patients who received a diagnosis of Graves' disease at the Teaching Hospital of
Campina Grande - PB. Methods: Retrospective cross-sectional study of all
the 257 medical records with ICD-10 E05 (related to thyrotoxicosis), present in the Archive
of HUAC Records, from September 1988 to December 2013.
data collection was carried out from the information contained in the medical records of
patients. The inclusion criterion used was the report of Graves' disease
diagnosed by endocrinologists from September 1988 to December
de 2012. The variables studied were: gender, age on admission date,
place of birth, origin, level of education, marital status, presence of
smoking and exophthalmos. Results: 257 medical records were analyzed. Of these,
87 met the inclusion criteria. With regard to the prevalence of smoking,
18.4% of patients reported being smokers; 16.1% denied smoking and for
65.5% of the patients did not check the record of data about the practice
smoking. In the present study, no statistically significant association was found
significant difference between smoking and the development of exophthalmos.
