Abstract:
INTRODUCTION: The study of cardiac auscultation requires doctors and
academics knowledge of timbre, tone and rhythm because those are elements that
form, not only, the basis of acoustic, but also the music itself as well. It has been
known that the musical experience alters the specific pathways of the brain, so that
a person will be capable to differentiate sounds more clearly. This kind of knowledge
shows that there are a possible relationship between the musical experience and
the ability in cardiac auscultation. In short, this will be the field of research of this
study. OBJECTIVES: General - To investigate the relationship between musical
experience and medical ability in cardiac auscultation; Specific - To evaluate if exists
difference, in the ability of cardiac auscultation, between medical students
musicians, medical students non-musicians but, with musical experience and
medical students without musical experience. METHODS: An observational and
random study, base on a comparison of three independent groups without any
been done by analyzing the information, of
fifty medical students, collected during one on one medical student ́s interview
randomly chosen, between August to September 2014 at University Hospital Alcides
Carneiro (HUAC) in Campina Grande. RESULTS E CONCLUSION: Medical
students musicians had better performance on auscultation test compared to
medical students non-musicians but, with musical experience and medical students
without musical experience.
