Resumen:
Aim: To evaluate the association between smoking and Ischemic Stroke in Hospital de Emergência
e Trauma Dom Luiz Gonzaga Fernandes in Campina Grande- PB .
Methodology : This is a study using secondary data on the study: Difference of blood pressure data
in the upper limbs as a risk factor for development of cerebrovascular or peripheral arterial
obstructive disease : case-control study .Two groups of patients were analyzed, a group presenting
Ischemic Stroke and a control group , both treated at that hospital . The study included 126
individuals , of which 35 % were part of the experimental group and 65 % were included in the
control group . The information about cases and controls were obtained through questionnaires and
survey data in the patients records .The statistical association between Ischemic Stroke and
smoking was evaluated using logistic regression.
Results: The odds ratio for Ischemic Stroke occurence in the presence of smoking exposure was
19.13 ( p = 0.029 ).
Conclusion : There was a statistically significant association between exposure to smoking and the
occurrence of Ischemic Stroke , in accordance with the results found in the literature ; the value
observed in this study was superior to what was found in other studies analyzed .
