The objective of this study was to estimate and quantify the chemical composition of the gas production technique in vitro four forage species (Brachiaria, buffel, and Gramão pangola). The inoculum for the in vitro incubation was obtained from three cows of the Holsteins breed and three sheep of the Santa Ines breed. The gas production was measured at 6, 24 and 48 hours. The experimental design was completely randomized 4 x 2 factorial, with the factors represented by the fodder and inocula. The brachiaria and the buffel had the highest in vitro digestibility of dry matter (68.20 and 65.47%), crude protein (12.18 and 4.16%), lower levels of neutral detergent fiber (64.03 and 68.34%) and lignin (3.28 and 3.91%), respectively. The production of methane and carbon dioxide suffered significant interaction between substrate and inoculum, except for the degradability of dry matter, total gas production, volatile fatty acids and pH. The Brachiaria and the buffel grass produced the largest quantities of gases. The forage of higher nutritional value was brachiaria followed by buffel.
