Resumo:
Fibromyalgia is a condition characterized by diffuse chronic pain associated with
various symptoms including fatigue, sleep disorders, cognitive impairment and
depressive episodes, its prevalence is higher in females. The treatment is
multidisciplinary, involving drugs, physical activity and cognitive therapies. Blocking
the sphenopalatine ganglion is a proposed treatment for cranial and facial pain
syndromes, it was used in case reports which showed improvement of various painful
conditions. Our study is derived from a larger study proposed to evaluate the efficacy
of this therapy in patients with fibromyalgia, being addressed here pain intensity and
their impact on quality of life of patients, using a double-blind randomized, placebo-
controlled trial. 23 patients were randomized (14 in the lidocaine group and 9 in the
placebo group) and accompanied by Visual Analog Scale of Pain and by the
Fibromyalgia Impact Questionaire. The results showed no significant differences
between the two groups at any time of the study comparing the two variables (pain
and quality of life). We conclude that there is no evidence in our study indicating that
the use of blocking the sphenopalatine ganglion in patients with fibromyalgia has
effectiveness, corroborating the findings of other clinical trials in the 90s .
