Résumé:
Encouraging breastfeeding remains a major challenge in public
health due to the high level of early weaning still exists these days even with
large development breastfeeding programs registered in Brazil between the
decades of 80 and 90. In order to combat weaning, the World Health
Organization and The United Nations Children's Fund, issued document
contemplating incentives to breastfeeding, "Ten Steps to Successful
Breastfeeding" to run in Baby Friendly Hospitals. Objectives: To evaluate the
promotion, protection and support of breastfeeding through implementation of
the "Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding" with health professionals and
mothers in Child Friendly Hospitals in Paraíba. Methodology: Was developed
research with a quantitative approach in maternity wards entitled "Baby Friendly
Hospital" in the cities of Campina Grande and João Pessoa, State of Paraíba.
Questionnaires were used to collect data, guided by the "ten steps". The
information collected was typed in the Excel 2010 and later analyzed using
SPSS 21 and presented in tables and graphs. Results: 37 health professionals
were interviewed, 100% of them claim that mothers receive information on
breastfeeding in the study sites. Among the 210 mothers interviewed, most
consider should breastfeed their children exclusively for six months.
Conclusion: In light of what had been surveyed believe that the Baby Friendly
Hospital Initiative in the services studied in Paraíba, within its possibilities and
difficulties presented figures which showed the quest for promotion of
breastfeeding in the institutions, however, with some aspects that need
improving.
