Resumo:
Atlases, as the set of maps, charts and figures are called, has been gaining more and more space
as an important method of supporting the practice of teaching and learning, allowing Geography
to become an even more relevant subject, especially for basic education students, assisting in
the process of building knowledge and emphasizing much more than just memorizing content.
The School Geographical Atlas of Mato Grosso – Paraiba appears with the objective of
providing an indispensable theoretical-methodological contribution to the study and
environmental, historical, socio-political and demographic analysis of the municipality, helping
teaching practice and contributing to the reading of maps by primary school students. The
methodology, based on a qualitative and descriptive approach, contemplates the history of the
formation of the municipality, the geographic location, the political-administrative division, the
natural, demographic and economic aspects. The Atlas brings together photographs, graphs,
tables and various information produced from the bibliographic survey, tabulation,
categorization and qualitative analysis of official and historical data from IBGE, IPEA, City
Hall and City Council; in addition to thematic maps developed from geoprocessing techniques
using the Geographic Information System (GIS) called Quantum Gis, computer software that
allows the treatment of databases and georeferenced files. There are also texts on basic notions
about the main characteristics of the planet Earth that allow the student to enter the cartographic
teaching process in municipal basic education.
