Resumo:
In the production of cellulose, large quantities of
waste water (black liquor) are liberated, that constitue a
great source of pollution, no anly because of its high
concentration of organic matter but also due to high
concentration of caustic soda used in fabrication process
of cellulose.
The present work demostrates that treatment of residue
by anaerobic digestion is technically feasible. To show
this an experimental investigation at semi-industrial scale
was carried o u t , in which an upflow anaerobic digestor was
fed w i t h black, liquor. The maxin'um organic load was 20 kg
COD . m 3 . day A treatment efficiency of 42 per cent in
terms of COD and 72 per sent in terms of BOD was obtaind.
It was stable an remained near neutral in the digestor, due
to obsorption of carbon dioxide.
