Resumo:
Trichosporon sp. consists of a saprophytic yeast-like fungus, commonly found in soils,
decaying wood, in the intermittent microbiota of the skin, gastrointestinal tract and upper
transmitted tract of human beings, in addition to being capable of forming biofilms in hospital
medical materials and equipment, which can cause from tolerated to invasive. Faced with the
scenario of resistance that this fungus has been showing to the treatment used to combat its
infections and the limited therapeutic arsenal that is available, the present work aimed to carry
out an integrative review about essential oils with anti-Trichosporon activities. The search was
carried out using the Pubmed, Science Direct, Google Scholar, BVS, LILACS, MEDLINE and
CAPES Periódicos Portal databases, seeking studies published in the period from 2012 to 2022,
in Portuguese, English or Spanish. To this end, the following descriptors were used:
Trichosporon, essential oil, acute toxicity, chronic toxicity and clinical study, in combination
in Portuguese and English, using the Boolean operators AND and OR. Fourteen essential oils
with anti-Trichosporon activity were found in the literature, of which seven stood out for their
strong antifungal activities and their low toxicities, namely: Rosmarinus officinalis, Lavandula
stoechas subsp. luisieri, Lavandula pedunculata, Psidium cattleianum sabine, Campomanesia
xanthocarpa, Tagetes minuta and Cinnamomum zeylanicum. In view of the data obtained in the
review carried out, the essential oil of Lavandula stoechas subsp. luisieri is the closest to a
potential candidate for a new antifungal with anti-Trichosporon activity, having shown better
concomitant antifungal activity with low toxicity, based on MIC and LD50 values compared to
other essential oils. However, more pre-clinical studies are needed that may or may not
corroborate its future therapeutic use.
