This study aimed to establish the severity spectrum of exposed fractures of the tibia
treated at the Emergency and Trauma Dom Luiz Gonzaga Fernandes Hospital from
Campina Grande - PB, according to the Gustilo-Anderson open fractures
classification. It was characterized as a descriptive epidemiological study, cross
sectional, documentary with non-probabilistic sample. There was quantitative
analysis of variables such as: number and frequency of patients with open fractures
of the tibia, severity of fractures according to the Gustilo-Anderson classification,
educational level, age, gender, time of the accident. The total sample was 127
individuals with tibia exposed fracture attended in the Emergency and Trauma Dom
Luiz Gonzaga Fernandes Hospital. Most fractures was distributed in the most severe
type of Gustilo classification, defined by III (56%). Then, types I and II represented
38% and 6% of fractures, respectively. Of the 127 patients total, 102 were male
(80%) and 26 were female (20%). The mean age was 37.6 years (± 17.8 ) and,
respectively, 14 and 82 years were the lowest and highest age of the individuals. The
total of 81 patients (63%) were younger than 40 years old.
