Abstract:
Introduction: Asthma is a heterogeneous disease, usually characterized by
chronic airway inflammation. It is defined by the historyof respiratory symptoms
such as wheeze, shortness of breath, chest tightness and cough that vary over
time and inintensity, together with variable expiratory airflow limitation (Souza et
al., 2009). It is estimated that, in Brazil, there are approximately 20 million
asthmatics (Sole et al., 2007) and that the direct cost of asthma (use of health
and drugs services) is twice as high among patients with uncontrolled asthma
than among those with controlled asthma, and the lack of asthma control the
largest component related to the use of health services (Santos et al., 2007).
The goal of asthma management is to obtain control of the disease. Control
refers to the extent to which the manifestations of asthma are suppressed,
either spontaneously or by treatment, and comprises two distinct areas: the
control of current clinical limitations and reduce future risks(Souza et al., 2009).
The control of the current limitations should preferably be evaluated in relation
to the last four weeks and includes symptoms, need for rescue medication,
limitation of physical activity and intensity of airflow limitation(Souza et al.,
2009). Objective: To relate the proper technique for using inhalation devices
and asthma control in patients treated in pulmonology clinics of the University
Hospital AlcidesCarneiro, Campina Grande - PB. Methods: Cross-sectional
study type survey with patients previously diagnosed with asthma, using
medications through inhalers dry powder and are treated in pulmonology clinics
of the University Hospital of Campina Grande-PB, between august 2016 and
September of2016 . The use of evaluation technique will be based on a
checklist and control of asthma is related to a questionnaire, and requested the
demonstration of use, during the observation of the researcher. Expected
results and contribution: With this work, expected to relate the proper
technique for using inhalation devices to asthma control in patients diagnosed
with asthma treated in pulmonology clinics of the University Hospital
AlcidesCarneiro, in Campina Grande-PB.
