Resumen:
Elderly persons, comprising about 11% of Brazilian population, present with
high prevalence of chronic degenerative disorders, such as cardiovascular diseases and
dementia. Among the risk factor for developing cardiovascular diseases, we highlight
hypercholesterolemia, whose pharmacological treatment includes statins, drugs with lipidlowering
action. Recent epidemiological data have suggested an association between high
cholesterol levels with Alzheimer Disease (AD), the most common cause of dementia,
accounting for about 60% to 80% of cases, and other types of dementia, thus a reduction in
such levels with statins may have a protective effect on cognitive function. Aims: To assess
the relationship between statins usage and cognitive decline (CD).
