Resumo:
Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome (OSAS) is defined as obstruction of air
passage through the upper airways during sleep. The patient has repeated
episodes of hypoxemia and hypercapnia, and because of those events, the sleep
becomes superficial and fragmented. The aim of this study is to perform clinical
and epidemiological surveys of these patients, characterizing the sample studied
about the sociodemographic aspects, as well as the prevalence of OSA
associated with other co-morbidities and conditions, such as high blood pressure
(hypertension), diabetes mellitus (DM), metabolic syndrome (MS) and the
Influence of female gonadal hormones (estrogen and progesterone). This is a
retrospective, observational study with descriptive approach, from a convenience
sample of patients who have performed overnight polysomnography in a
specialized laboratory, from January to June 2016. According to the results, it was
observed in the sample predominance of males, most were between 18 and 45
years old and was overweight. It was observed a significant association between
OSAS severity and the presence of hypertension. As for diabetes mellitus, there
was no significant statistical association with the severity of OSA.
There is a need in the development of a research aimed at feeding an
organized collection system, analysis and data disclosures, so that we can
increase knowledge of the various aspects involved of OSAS. OSAS should be
considered a public health disease, given their unequivocal individual, social and
economicac damages.
