Résumé:
Congenital heart defects are cardiac abnormalities present from birth. They are
classified in cyanotic and acyanotic, and Interventricular communication, the most prevalent
defect. There are few data in the Northeastern Brazil on the prevalence of those
malformations. Objective: To observe the prevalence of surgical procedures for congenital
heart defects correction and the clinical and epidemiological data of those patients in Campina
Grande-PB, Brazil. Methods: Cross-sectional study through medical records analysis of the
patients attended in a Clinic which is considered as a reference at the evaluated city, who
underwent surgery between January 1, 2005 and December 31, 2014. Tabulating data and
statistical analysis were performed through computational environment SPSS, version 21 .
Results: 265 patients underwent correction of isolated or associated with congenital heart
diseases; 147 (55.5%) were females and 118 (44.5%) were male; 22.6% were between 0-11
years of age; 10.9% between 12- 18 years; 35.8% between 19 - 59 years, 1.9% from 60 years
on and 28.7% had no data of birth in the records. The most prevalent types of heart disease
were: Atrial Communication (45.3%); Interventricular communication (19.6%); Persistent
ductus arteriosus (23.4%) and other types of congenital heart defects (11.7%). Conclusion:
The prevalence of atrial septal defect in acyanotic heart disease differs from data in the
literature. The prevalence of corrections was higher among adults. These data points to a
deficiency in the early diagnosis of congenital heart diseases in Campina Grande-PB.
