Abstract:
An acquired human immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) is a
disease of the human immune system caused by the human immunodeficiency
virus 1 (HIV-1). There is a greater susceptibility for infections, being considered
a pandemic. With the development and evolution of antiretroviral therapies
(ART), there was an evident decrease in morbidity, with consequences even in
the epidemiological profile of patients admitted in ICU. OBJECTIVES: To
describe the profile of patients with HIV infection admitted to adult ICUs at the
Hospital Universitário Alcides Carneiro (HUAC). METHODS: A retrospective
observational study was carried out based on the collection of data in medical
records of patients with HIV infection admitted to an HUAC adult ICU between
January 2015 and December 2016. RESULTS: Nineteen patients were
included in the study. The mean time to stay in the ICU was 12.2 days. 73.7%
evolved to death only 28.6% of these used ART on a regular basis prior to
hospitalization. In addition, 100% of patients had opportunistic infection.
CONCLUSION: The majority of patients had a recent serological diagnosis, in
addition to not having ART or used irregularly. Thus, the importance of early
diagnosis is emphasized, which allows early identification of the disease, in
addition to a greater effectiveness of antiretroviral medication.
