Resumo:
The date of the last menstrual period is the initial method for determining the gestational age, however, the first trimester ultrasound by measuring the crown-rump length is the gold standard for establishing the gestational age. The measurement of the height of the uterine fundus is a less accurate method, however, it can help in the calculation of the gestational age when the date of the last menstruation is not known and/or the first trimester ultrasound was not performed. The objective of this study was to compare the gestational age calculated by ultrasonography in the first trimester with that determined by measuring the height of the uterine fundus. The inclusion criteria for the selected pregnant women were: pregnant with a single fetus, without a history of fetal malformation, non-users of tobacco, alcohol or illicit drugs, body mass index (BMI) within the normal range and without evidence of diseases that would compromise the height of the uterine fundus. Forty-nine pregnant women assisted in the city of Campina Grande (PB), at the Instituto de Saúde Elpìdio de Almeida (ISEA) were evaluated.
head-buttock. The height of the uterine fundus was measured and the gestational age was calculated using the McDonald's rule and direct conversion. It was observed that first-trimester ultrasound was the gold standard method for calculating gestational age. However, it was demonstrated that the gestational age calculated by the McDonald's rule overestimated that determined by the first trimester ultrasound and the direct conversion of the height of the uterine fundus underestimated it. Uterine height continues as an auxiliary method in the calculation of gestational age when the patient does not have a first-trimester ultrasound.
