Resumo:
Intimate partner aggression is a form of common and under-reported violence
in our society. This work aims to investigate the reasons why perpetrators commit
such acts, analyzing if there is mental illness and which are the most frequent
psychopathologies. Research was done on electronic databases (PubMed and
Scielo), from 1998 to 2018. Population-based studies were included to determine a
psychopathological profile of aggressors and excluded studies without
methodological definition delineated or with biased evaluations. We found 499
articles, but only 5 were selected. There was a wide variation in the prevalence of
psychopathologies among the aggressors. The most common disorders were
substance abuse and antisocial and paranoid personality disorders. The variety on
prevalence and the low number of studies undermines the definition if there is mental
illness related to domestic violence. As for the most common pathologies, this study
agrees with the one brought by the literature
