Resumo:
Sleep is a complex and active state of animal behavior, which
alternates with waking states. It is composed of phases, which alternate cyclically during the
night and characterized by behavioral and physiological milestones, and endogenous and
exogenous. Sleep disorders (SD) are prevalent and pose health risks, but they are
often underdiagnosed, mainly due to poor medical knowledge
about the subject, a direct reflection of the non-incorporation of this in the medical graduation. GOAL
GENERAL: Apply the ASKME questionnaire to students and professors of the medical course at
Federal University of Campina Grande, in order to describe the knowledge about sleep in the
period of 2017. SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES: To describe the knowledge about Medicine
of Sleep among UFCG students; compare knowledge between students and teachers;
check the workload offered by the institution on Sleep and its disorders.
METHODOLOGY: Application of the ASKME questionnaire through a convenience sample to
students of the second and last year of medicine, and professors of this course, after signing the
Term of Free and Informed Consent (TCLE). The data were analyzed
statistically through the absolute and relative frequency of correct answers to the questions of the
questionnaire, and the comparative analysis between the groups through the student t test.
RESULTS: Medical students had an average of 52% correct answers (49.8% for
second-year students and 57.4% for sixth-year students), teachers had an average of
55.4% of correct answers; for the 95% confidence interval, p = 0.17 was found, using the t test
from student. CONCLUSION: Teachers and students evaluated through the ASKME questionnaire
obtained percentage of correct answers considered low; there was no statistical difference
significant for these two groups. The workload in Sleep Medicine in the curriculum of
medicine of this institution is insufficient.
