Resumen:
Benzodiazepines act in situations of anxiety, insomnia and
epilepsy. They are currently one of the most used medications in Brazil, not only
for the relative safety of use but also for the not so carefully prescribed
prescription of health professionals. This fact puts in doubt the real necessity
and indication regarding the use of this medicine. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of
this study was to identify the epidemiological profile of benzodiazepine users
(BDZ) of the RaimundoCarneiro Basic Health Unit, located in the Pedregal
neighborhood of Campina Grande, PB, reflecting on the reasons for its use in
the unit. METHODOLOGY: The study was quantitative descriptive and occurred
from June to July 2017. The data collection was performed through a previously
structured questionnaire that deals with the use of BDZ, with emphasis on
Clonazepam and Diazepam, by this population. The data were entered into
spreadsheets, and subjected to statistical treatment using SPSS 17.0 software
for Windows. RESULTS: A woman between the ages of 46 and 60 years old,
single, with comorbidities, with low educational level, with low income and with
great ease of obtaining the income is the profile of the patient who most uses
BDZ in the study community, being the use for more than 10 years extremely
common. The main reason for use is insomnia, which does not justify prolonged
use. CONCLUSIONS: The knowledge of the users of BDZS is essencial for the
formulation of effective intervention of strategies in mental promotion.
