Abstract:
INTRODUCTION: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an inflammatory disease
systemic, autoimmune and chronic that preferentially affects joints
peripheral. The metabolic syndrome (MS) corresponds to a set of factors of
classical cardiovascular risk, with cardiovascular disease currently the
cause of mortality in patients with RA. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this work is to evaluate
the frequency of metabolic syndrome in patients treated at the outpatient clinic of
Rheumatoid Arthritis at the University Hospital Alcides Carneiro in Campina Grande –
PB METHOD: Retrospective study, using demographic and clinical data of
patients contained in the medical records, applying the criteria of Metabolic Syndrome
of the NCEP ATP III (2005) for the early diagnosis of association of such
comorbidities. RESULTS: Metabolic syndrome was observed in 29
patients (41.4%) with rheumatoid arthritis. The frequency of metabolic syndrome was
significantly higher among patients who had fasting blood glucose ≥ 100
(86.7%), triglycerides ≥ 150 (76.9%) and abdominal circumference ≥ 88 (52.3%).
CONCLUSION: Our study found similar results with other studies in
literature, corroborating the significant frequency of MS in patients with RA,
although the result can be quite different due to the variability
sociodemographic characteristics of the populations studied.
