Résumé:
The overall objective of this dissertation is to explore how the contemporary dimensions of
social movements (material, symbolic and political) can help promote sustainable
consumption. As a result, three articles were prepared. Article I analyzed the political and
strategic trajectory of sustainable consumption in the last two decades (2001-2022) through a
bibliometric study using the VOSViewer software. The results identified the collaboration of
European institutions, cooperation between socio-economically developing nations, and the
progress of sustainable consumption aligned with the SDGs. Article II related the dimensions
of social movements (material, symbolic and political) presented by Scherer-Warren (2013),
with categorical analysis focused on the promotion of sustainable consumption. It was
displayed that contemporary objectives relate social movements and sustainable consumption
by the collectivity and social transformations, while searching to improve quality of life
without relinquishing environmental resources. Article III analyzed how social movements
relate to the promotion of sustainable consumption based on the actions of these organizations
Akatu Institute, Instituto Brasileiro de Defesa do Consumidor (IDEC) and Greenpeace Brasil,
as they considered the material, symbolic and political dimensions. With the help of a
multiple case study, semi-structured interviews and the use of the ATLAS.ti software, the
results presented conformities of actions around areas of daily consumption, areas of
cooperation, material mechanisms, symbolic integrations and socio-political participations to
leverage sustainable responsibilities, strengthening consumers' commitments for their
consumption activities. This work is justified by studying the contributions of social
movements as an alternative that can help promote sustainable consumption, promoting
socio-environmental benefits. Nongovernment organizations in the context of sustainability
means to value new ways of thinking and acting, considering the promotion of actions that
contemplate the participation of society the decision process for inclusive and sustainable
consumption.
