The uncontrolled generation of Urban Solid Waste (USW) constitutes a global environmental
issue, given that, most of the time, the final disposal of these USW is inadequately carried out,
resulting in numerous environmental impacts that adversely affect public health and the quality
of the environment. In this context, the present study aimed to evaluate the environmental
impacts generated during the operational phase of the Sanitary Landfill of SousaPB.
The
methodological steps included the survey of project activities, conducting a simplified
diagnosis of the area, identifying and analyzing environmental aspects and impacts, calculating
the Waste Landfill Quality Index (WLQI), and proposing measures, plans, and environmental
control programs. These steps were developed based on research in scientific and technical
literature, field visits, and photographic records. Based on the results, it was found that the most
impacted aspects were the abiotic and anthropic factors, and the most affected environmental
components were the soil, air, and health. 32 environmental impacts were identified, with 22 of
them having a negative connotation for the area of influence. The WLQI for the studied area
was 6,82, indicating inadequate operational conditions. Among the proposed measures, plans,
and programs, the environmental education program targeting landfill workers and the general
population stands out. In conclusion, it is expected that the results obtained in this study will
contribute to the sustainable development of the activities of the Sanitary Landfill in SousaPB.
