Resumen:
In this work PP/bentonite nanocomposites were prepared by melt
intercalation on a Haake System 90 Torque Rheometer operating with a counterrotating
twin-screw extruder accessory. In the first stage of the work, organophilic
bentonitic clays from the Paraiba State were synthesized with alkyl ammonium
salts and characterized by X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy,
thermogravimetric analysis and Foster's swelling method. The results showed the
successful modification of clay by the quaternary ammonium salt. In the second
part of the work PP/bentonite nanocomposites were prepared by melt intercalation.
Their formation and properties were determined by X-ray diffraction,
thermogravimetric analysis, mechanical testing and differential scanning
calorimetry. The results showed that composites reinforced with bentonite,
modified with bromide salt, displayed significant increases in strength and modulus
at low filler charge and a thermic stability.
