Resumo:
Homophobia has implications and consequences in the lives of those who experience it,
which can cause lasting damage to homosexuals. However, there is a subtype of homophobia
that is still invisible, the familial homophobia. Despite talking about family prejudice, there is
little research aimed at studying this type of homophobia. Therefore, this article is a
qualitative study of narrative review that used empirical research articles, carried out with
homosexuals, to verify how the theme is being portrayed in the literature. Considering the
descriptors familial homophobia and intrafamilial homophobia, ten empirical articles found in
the following databases were analyzed: Scielo, PepSic, BVS and Google Scholar. The
analysis aimed to discuss the following categories: how homophobia and familial
homophobia are being defined; who are the people described in the studies; what are the
motivations and explanations presented and what are the main consequences. As a result, it
was noticed that there is still a need for improvement in the characterization of the research
subjects for a better homogenization of the data and to allow a possible comparison between
groups of subjects. It was also observed that few studies use the concept of familial
homophobia and the explanations given are mainly based on the influence of
heteronormativity, misogyny and sexism. In addition, in the practice of familial homophobia,
situations of surveillance, coercion and control of bodies prevailed, which can generate issues
such as: search for financial independence, expulsion from home, suicidal ideation, among
others. Therefore, important aspects emerged for a deeper understanding of the phenomenon
of familial homophobia.
