Anxiety disorders and depression are impediments to a healthy and satisfying life,
and in recent years, the incidence of these health conditions has shown a significant
worldwide growth. Conventional drug treatments are the first option
treatment, mainly in the public health system, but they present some
disadvantages, including serious adverse effects and high cost, making it difficult to access
medicines. The objective of this work was to carry out a literature review
descriptive integrative, on the use of medicinal plants as therapeutic alternatives for the
management of anxiety and depression, providing information on the most used plants
popularly, phytotherapics, forms of use and side effects, evidencing its effectiveness and
better acceptance by patients, as a way to bring well-being and health back
without compromising the treatment. A literature review was carried out on scientific bases such as
Scielo, Pubmed, Google Scholar and the Virtual Health Library (VHL). using as
descriptors (Anxiety, Depression, Herbal Medicines, Medicinal Plants, Anxiolytics, Therapies
complementary services, Mental Health). According to the research, 8 articles were selected that
corresponded to the topic of interest to which they showed that plants with properties
anxiolytics and antidepressants help to control the symptoms and in some cases even stopped
with the same. This work shows that plants such as Crataegus oxyacanth, Piper
methysticum, Hypericum perforatum, Valeriana officinalis and Passiflora incarnata have
beneficial effects of controlling symptoms of anxiety and depression, with no manifestation of side effects
severe side effects of low cost and easy access to the population.
