Resumo:
The present work seeks to open a discussion on the analysis of the built heritage of the city of Pau dos Ferros - RN, based on the specific cases of two monuments listed by the Municipal Council, namely: the Antônio Soares de Holanda Public Market and the Joaquim Correia House of Popular Culture. Thus, the initial problem that motivated this study was triggered by the spatial transformations that the city has undergone in recent years, which have led to the misclassification or even the demolition of several historic buildings, and from this, an attempt was made to understand how the built heritage has been treated, through qualitative research using both oral and bibliographical sources. Thus, in the light of the concept of document/monument proposed by Jacques Le Goff (2005), the research sought to understand the real monuments as true documents that help to tell the history of the municipality of Pau dos Ferros. In general terms, the study was able to conclude that the town in question still lacks many of the tools that would allow an effective heritage conservation policy to be put in place, highlighting the need for heritage-oriented education aimed at better enlightment of the population.
