Abstract:
The silicosis is considered the oldest occupational disease and the leading cause of disability from
respiratory diseases related to work. Due to the scarcity of epidemiological surveys on silicosis in Brazil and
the near absence of such research in the Northeast, has developed this study to raise statistical data on the
prevalence of the disease in the population served by the local health district of Cumarús, rural area of Pedra
Lavrada, PB. The study was guided in data collection episodes of workers of quarries with a confirmed
diagnosis of silicosis treated in the health post in interim 2003 to 2007 and it was’nt found any cases of
silicosis in this population. Thus, we can confirm that silicosis is a disease whose cause is related to work, by
stressing the classification of the group I Schilling, in the district since the predominant agricultural activity,
and the scarce number of workers who have contact with silica dust. However, you can also see the possible differences in the geographical distribution of disease in the city of carved stone, and the importance of prevention of risk of mining activities in the areas considered most affected.
