Abstract:
The silicosis is considered the oldest occupational disease and the leading cause of disability from
respiratory diseases related to work. Due to the scarcity of epidemiological surveys on silicosis, has
developed this study to raise statistical data about the disease among workers of quarries seen at the Family
Health Program in the urban area of Pedra Lavrada, PB, in the last five years. The result of the research
presented a live patient, male, 48 years, income between 1 to 3 minimum salaries and worker of quarries
during 30 years, which represents a long period of exposure to silica. The study was guided in data
collection episodes from the Municipal Health Registry and interviews directed to patients who met the
criteria for inclusion in the research. There were signs that might suggest under-reporting of cases and
inadequate filling of death certificates in which the cause of death is recorded as other diseases other than
silicosis. Thus, it is possible to realize that silicosis is a reality and the only measure to prevent it is prophylaxis through improved working conditions in quarries. Other data and their discussions may be found
in topic results and discussion.
