Resumen:
The silicosis is considered the oldest occupational disease and the leading cause of disability from
respiratory diseases related to work. Due to the scarcity of epidemiological surveys on this suBject, has
developed this study to raise statistical data about this desease in miners that live in rural areas from Pedra
Lavrada, PB, the last five years. The result of the research presented a live patient, male, 43 years, which
did not use a protective material, which was build for 20 years, representing a long period of exposure to
silica. The study was guided in data collection episodes from the Municipal Health Registry and interviews
directed to patients who met the criteria for inclusion in the research. It is possible under-reporting of cases
and inadequate filling of death certificates. It was possible to conclude that the silicosis exists in this city due
to mining activities carried out and the only measure to avoid it is to prophylaxis with better conditions of
work in the quarries. Other data and their discussions may be found in topic results and discussion.
